Meals on Wheels Serving Central Virginia provides freshly cooked meals to homebound seniors and adults who are not able to prepare meals for themselves. Our menus and recipes take into consideration the special needs, preferences, and dietary requirements of older persons.

Meals on Wheels takes pride in delivering delicious, nutritious, and visually appealing meals to our homebound clients. All of our meals are prepared in our Community Kitchen by professional chefs and volunteers.  The Community Kitchen is dedicated to providing high-quality food prepared from only the freshest ingredients. Our Food Service Director and Community Dietitians work closely to develop menus that meet our client’s nutritional needs. Menu items range from comfort foods such as old fashioned macaroni & cheese to sophisticated dishes such as spaghetti bolognese. 

Each client's specific needs are met by providing diverse menus appropriate to the individual's health status. Meals on Wheels offers 15 special diets. To meet our client’s medical needs we offer five therapeutic diets including Bland, Diabetic, No Salt Added, Renal, and Renal/Diabetic. We offer four texture modified diets including soft with chopped meat, diabetic/soft, renal/soft and pureed. To accommodate our client's with severe food allergies, cultural, or religious food preferences, we offer seven elimination diets including No Beef, No Fowl, No Pork, No Eggs, No Seafood, No Chocolate and Vegetarian. Through our special diets program we can ensure that our clients have the most appropriate and nutritious meals delivered according to their needs.  In addition to providing nutritious meals, our registered dietitians are available to assist you with a variety of topics such as:

  • Evaluate your current food intake & make suggestions related to your symptoms (e.g. nausea, poor appetite, diarrhea, weight loss, etc.)Assist with special diet needs or food allergies
  • Discuss food safety
  • Help you obtain liquid nutrition supplements (such as Boost or Boost Plus) if you are underweight

How can I get an appointment to talk with a nutritionist? Simply call the office at 673-5035 and ask to speak with Wendy Leonard, RD or Colleen Keller, RD.  Nutrition counseling is provided free of charge, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
